Toys are missing!

Henry dreams of a rough and ready Arizona Ranger. When his playmates’ toys go missing, Henry hops on his hobby horse to track down the stealing varmint.

But being a Ranger isn’t easy. After falsely accusing several suspects, Henry doubts he’s Ranger material. Ironically, a flock of chickens gives him an idea that just might help him catch the thief.

Henry will need all his powers of observation to find the children’s toys and regain faith in himself.

Using animals as the suspects, Ranger Henry helps children understand they shouldn’t rush to judgment without having all the facts. Henry tries taking the easy path to solve the crime at first. When he realizes that isn’t working, he almost gives up. But with a bit of thought and creativity, he finds a way to solve the crime without accusing anyone else.

Review

Good old-fashioned creativity! ~ Patricia Reding for Readers’ Favorite – 5 Stars!
Caren Cantrell allows young ones to experience the joy of seeking law and order as in the days of the old American West.

The imagination of a child is both limited and limitless, by which I mean children may be limited to knowledge of the things to which they are exposed, but once a child is presented with an idea, they may find innumerable ways to toy with the information received. Such is the case in Ranger Henry: The Case of the Toy Thief which incidentally boasts joyful, colorful, and intricate illustrations by Gail Maguire. Clearly, Ranger Henry must have been taught something about the Arizona Rangers (which is information included at the back of the book), as a consequence of which he took a fancy to play out the kind of activities the Arizona Rangers had engaged in back in times past. In so doing, Ranger Henry exercises his imagination, both in his plan to track the toy thief and also in setting a trap that ultimately leads him to the culprit. In this day of electronic gadgets and video games, it is heartwarming to see Ranger Henry exercising some good old-fashioned creativity and having some great outdoor fun.

There is nothing at all not to love about Ranger Henry: The Case of the Toy Thief!

Caren Cantrell’s narrative weaves a delightful children’s story that takes young readers into the mind and heart of young Henry, and his desire to be of service to his community. He shows concern for his childhood peers and for the animals on the land where he lives. He is reserved even when he thinks he’s figured it out, not rushing in or disrupting to accuse, choosing instead to watch from a safe distance in a beautiful portrayal of patience. The story is brought to life by the unique, vivid illustrations created by Gail Maguire, culminating in a team that complements each other’s work for the benefit of us all. ~ Jamie Michele for Readers Favorite – 5 Stars!
A grand first mystery story for children, written at a level they can read on their own. ~ Jack Magnus – 5 Stars!

Is it Miss Polly’s cat or Charlie’s duck? Kids will have fun trying to guess along with Ranger Henry just who is the toy thief. Gail Maguire’s pen and wash illustrations are brilliant; her color palette evokes the Arizona desert perfectly, giving the reader a first-hand look at the wide-open spaces, saguaro cacti, and the looming mountains in the distance. Cantrell also includes A Brief History of the Arizona Rangers at the back of the text for those who want to learn more about the rich tradition of the Rangers, whose history reaches back to 1860. Ranger Henry: The Case of the Toy Thief is highly recommended.
